Caterpillar Duo Cone Seal Installation Tool

Aug 26, 2014  Installing floating seals. Discussion in 'Shop Talk' started by willie59, Jul 4, 2013. Talking about the cat install tool, I went to my local cat house to get that tool years ago, only to be told they'd have to order it on the next tool order in about a month. However I think our readers need to be aware of the way a Duo-cone seal.

Been trying to fix an oil leak in the RH finals. Have installed new duo cone seals in board of the sprocket as well as out board. Put new oil in and still leaking oil from between sprocket and final drive case. Reading the dis-assembly & assembly instructions there is mention of a special tool Seal Installer IS8966. Possibly the duo cone seals have not seated correctly.

The tool looks in the pictures like a rim of sorts that is used to seat the seal. Noticed the o ring wants to roll off the retaining rim. I would be interested in suggestions what's used to substitute the special tooling and any other information of relevance to the leak.

When installing RasterLinkPro5 into Windows7 or Windows8, please be sure to install the latest version of RasterLinkPro5. The latest version of installer is available to download from. Crack rasterlink pro 5.

Make sure the surfaces that the rubber ring on the Duo cone seal rides is free of dirt, wire brush or sand surfaces on final drive case side and sprocket side.Check surface for a crack in final drive case. If you have the alumiun cages that was mentioned earler check for a crack in the cage, and slways install new O rings behind the cage.

The tool shown only compresses the rubber ring to install it in the groove.same thing can be done by evenly working the rubber ring in the groove with your fingers.A little liquid soap on the rubber O ring makes it easer to seat the O ring in the groove so that It doesn't twist. While installing the the bearing cup into the cage assembly p/n 9k6842 described in 6k4665 Final Drive Group, managed to damage the aluminum rim seal insert that the outer duo cone seal set abuts on-best description is that is about 5/8' wide, angle rim that inserts into the end of the cage assembly. I looked up the seals in the 82J (equivalent to the 49J) for the same 6K4665 final drive group and the seal group is a 4K6049 (4 required per side). Does not show a part number for just the seat ring. Regal shows the 4K6049 as a good number at $23.88 ea.

So other after market sources ought to have them as well.

Floating, duo-cone, cone, metal face, toric ring, all names used to describe a very old seal design used primarily in undercarriage components, finals drives, and rollers. Recently a thread asked how to properly install floating seals.

Installation tools are available, I'm pretty certain a Cat store can supply the tool, but in a pinch you can still achieve a proper install with some simple materials. A floating seal assembly consists of two matching seal halves. Each seal half has two components, 1) the white iron (cast iron) seal ring which has a precision ground surface that mates with the other half to form a rotating seal, and 2) the toric ring which is the rubber elastomer (think bohunkin o-ring) that provides both the tension to force the two seal halves together and provides the external seal. When installing a floating seal it's imperitive that the toric ring is not twisted, is not rolled up the ramps of either the seal ring or ramps of the housing ring it fits in, and is uniform in installed depth, no spots where toric is installed deeper than other spots. First thing to do is clean the housing ring that the toric ring presses into.

Use only a soft wire brush on a die grinder, do not use any form of abrasive tool. As far as the housing goes, it's useable as long as the outer lip which holds the toric ring in place is still good, and as long as the ramps aren't deeply pitted, defaced, or worn. A little bit of imperfection of the ramp is tollerable as the toric ring is under a lot of pressure which will make a seal, but you at least need a good smooth surface for a good seal.

Now prepare the floating seal for install. Always work with seal on a clean cloth and keep work equipment and area as clean and dirt/dust free as possible. Find some automotive type insulated wire that will fit snug in the groove between the toric ring and the underside of the seal ring face. I happened to find some 12 GA insulated wire that worked perfect.
